Burglars robbed about 800 kilograms of human hair worth at 45 lakhs from the Mariamman temple complex in Irukkankudi village, Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu . The thieves made away with about 16 gunny bags of hair stored in the temple complex but did attempt to rob cash or gold from the 400-year-old temple, which is about 420kms away from the state capital Chennai.
Like in Tirumala Tirupati temple, devotees of the Mariamman temple shave their heads and offer hair to deity. The hair is sorted out and later auctioned either online or through traditional bidding. The hair so collected has a huge demand in international markets for wig making. Mariamman temple authorities use to auction hair once in three years and the temple was currently processing the hair for auctioning.
According to reports, the robbers could loot only 16 bags out of the 80 plus full bags of hair stored in three rooms at the temple.
The incident came to light on Friday morning after the temple priest opened the temple for morning poojas. A police complaint has been filed by the temple authorities.
